Lins and I have been talking about this for ages — even if it is something from a decade ago when we were two entirely different people. We weren’t still in college, although we still largely lived the life; it’s hard to get away from that mindset living in and around Ann Arbor. We only know a couple of people now that those two people knew back then; I honestly don’t know how many of the others “made it out”.

The last I can remember, before I gave it up, it was Tuesdays at…well let’s not name names. Usually several people would have their Magic deck with them and would be playing as people started showing up, or they’d watch TV or chat about whatever. Eventually, everyone would be there and we’d all pick seats, get our dice, pencils, and character sheets.

At the time we were playing Earthdawn, although it had been Shadowrun or half a dozen other RPGs at some point. That was very organized, now that I think about it — game night implied one specific game, for months on end, Tuesday after work.

Tonight, we played Risk. “D” came over while her man (the other “D”) recorded his podcast; apparently the dingy uses a good enough mic that it picks up her typing on her PowerBook in another room. We’ve got games in the bookcase out there that I bought apartments ago that we’ve never played — next week it might be one of those, or a card game, or even Risk again. I pronounced that if we ever played Axis & Allies, it would be immediately after lunch on a Saturday; and that we might have to consider a chess clock so the war doesn’t take as long as it did in real life. D said she hated that game growing up because it could take weeks; maybe as reasonable adults (stop snickering) we can keep that from happening (maybe).

I’m not ruling out an RPG someday either, but it probably won’t happen soon. We sort of expect that we’ll pick up some strays over time, but at any reasonable rate it’ll take a while to collect enough to make such a thing interesting. For now, however, we’ve got a bookshelf, a bunch of games on it, plenty of table, a “Hoyle” book, and a game night.
